Why I Started Moonlight Creative Writing (and Where It’s Going)
October 7, 2025/
Welcome back! I’m so thrilled to have you back at Moonlight Creative Writing. I know it’s been a while since I last visited my little corner of the internet reserved for writers penning their masterpieces after dark. Over time, teaching, life and other creative projects pulled me away. But now I’m back — with a renewed sense of purpose! This blog isn’t just about sharing prompts anymore; it’s about documenting my journey as I step into the world of self-publishing for the very first time.
Why I started Moonlight Creative Writing
The origin of this website hearkens back to my early beginnings as a teacher in the UK. My days were filled with standing in front of a classroom and my evenings with meticulous planning. I was tired – no, exhausted. And, as so often happens with these things we call “careers”, my hobbies were left gathering dust.
When I first launched this site, I meant it to be a quiet corner of the internet where writers could find inspiration and encouragement. Writers who have to practice their passion in stolen moments and quiet times. That’s where the ‘moonlight’ metaphor comes from. And me – I am the moth!🦋
My journey so far...
Over time, I began to collate a catalogue of writing inspiration for every month of the year (except November. I don’t know why I struggled so much with that month) and even tried my hand at creating a calendar of writing prompts. I also shared some of my thoughts as a writer in occasional journals, guides for world-building and flexing those tired writing muscles after a long hiatus. By far my biggest achievement to date was my first completed short story, The Whispering Tree, a hauntingly dark story about a child and a seemingly supernatural threat.
I’ve also enjoyed spreading my work and ideas on social media, building connections and creativity with the writing community on Instagram. I’ve learned so much about writing and publishing from them that I have put into action… and intend to continue doing so as I step forward onto the path to publication.
What does the future hold...?
My new focus is to document my self-publishing journey: the highs, the lows and the lessons I learn along the way that I’ll share with you all. I’ll also be doing more of what I’ve always done to inspire you (writing prompts, practical advice, resources) but with a fresh look and perspective.
So here’s to a bright, creative future of crafting our masterpieces under the light of the moon! 🌕
Next time: We’ll kick off October with some seasonal writing prompts.🍂
